Fall Skincare Tips: How to Protect Your Skin This Season

Fall is here, and whether you live in Florida or somewhere with a more dramatic seasonal change, your skin may notice that something in the air is different. For our patients who spend at least part of the year in Florida, the climate may remain warm and humid, but changes in humidity, cooler temperatures, indoor air conditioning, and increased time in drier climates can still affect the skin. These fall skincare tips can help keep your complexion hydrated, comfortable, and healthy as the seasons change.

Out with the old: Refresh summer-exposed skin

After months of bright sunshine, beach days, outdoor activities, and plenty of time in the sun, fall is a good time to reassess your skin.

Even with consistent sunscreen use, cumulative sun exposure can contribute to visible pigmentation, uneven skin tone, fine lines, and changes in skin texture over time. Fall can be an ideal season to talk with your dermatologist about professional treatments that can improve the appearance of sun damage and help maintain smoother, more even-looking skin.

Depending on your skin type, concerns, and goals, treatments such as Fraxel, Clear + Brilliant, or BBL may be options to consider. Your dermatologist can recommend the treatment and timing that make the most sense for your skin.

Professional treatments are only one part of a good fall skincare routine. Daily sunscreen remains essential year-round, even when temperatures begin to drop.

Layer up with a richer moisturizer

Your fall wardrobe is not the only thing that may need an extra layer. As the air becomes cooler or drier, your skin may lose moisture more easily, particularly if you already have dry or sensitive skin.

A richer moisturizer can help support the skin barrier and reduce the dry, tight feeling that can come with seasonal changes. Pay attention to areas that tend to become especially dry, including the face, neck, chest, hands, and body.

If you have oily or acne-prone skin, that does not mean you should stop moisturizing. Instead, look for a lightweight moisturizer that provides hydration without feeling heavy or greasy.

And, of course, keep applying sunscreen every morning. Cooler temperatures do not mean UV exposure disappears.

Give your makeup brushes a fresh start

Changing your wardrobe for fall? Consider giving your makeup brushes a refresh, too.

Makeup brushes can accumulate makeup residue, oil, and microorganisms over time, especially when they are used frequently. Regular cleaning can help keep your brushes fresh and reduce the buildup that can contribute to clogged pores and skin irritation.

Make brush cleaning part of your regular skincare routine rather than waiting until the end of the season. If a brush is worn out, difficult to clean, or has a persistent buildup of product, it may be time to replace it.

This is especially important if you are prone to breakouts or sensitive skin. Clean tools, clean hands, and properly stored makeup can all be part of a healthy skincare routine.

Bring a little extra moisture into your home

For those living in colder or drier climates, a humidifier may be helpful when indoor heating starts to dry out the air.

Low humidity can contribute to dry, tight, uncomfortable skin. Adding moisture to the air may help support skin hydration, particularly overnight.

For our patients who travel between South Florida and cooler climates, it can also be helpful to adjust your skincare routine based on where you are spending time. A lightweight moisturizer may be comfortable during humid Florida weather, while a richer formula may be more appropriate when you are somewhere colder and drier.

The same principle applies to the rest of your routine. Pay attention to how your skin feels and adjust your products as the environment changes.

Your fall skincare routine does not have to be complicated

The best fall skincare tips are often the simplest: keep your skin hydrated, protect it from UV exposure, cleanse gently, keep your makeup tools clean, and adjust your moisturizer when the weather changes.

If your skin feels unusually dry, irritated, or sensitive, or you are noticing new pigmentation or texture concerns after summer, it may be a good time to schedule a professional skin assessment.
