A pimple is probably the last thing anyone wants to see right before their wedding. Unfortunately, stress, hormones and everyday life do not always follow the wedding calendar.
If you have a pimple before your wedding, resist the urge to scrub, pick or squeeze it. Trying too many aggressive treatments at once can irritate your skin and make the blemish more noticeable. Instead, your approach should depend on how much time you have before the big day.
Several Weeks Before the Wedding
If your wedding is still several weeks away, you have more options.
A consistent skincare routine can help manage breakouts and prevent new blemishes. This is also a good time to schedule professional treatments that you have already used successfully, such as a chemical peel or HydraFacial.
The key word is already. Your wedding is not the time to experiment with a completely new treatment or aggressive skincare product. Dermatologists recommend giving acne treatments time to work and avoiding frequent changes that can irritate the skin.
If you are considering a professional facial or peel before your wedding, give your skin enough time to recover. Your provider can recommend the appropriate treatment and timing based on your skin and history.
The Week Before the Wedding
This is when you want to be especially careful.
If you have a blemish that has come to the surface, a trained professional may be able to perform an appropriate extraction. However, not every blemish should be extracted. Deep or painful acne, including cysts and nodules, should be evaluated by a dermatologist rather than squeezed or manipulated.
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends leaving deep, painful acne alone because picking or squeezing can increase inflammation and the risk of scarring, discoloration and infection.
If the blemish is large, painful or sitting deep beneath the skin, a dermatologist may recommend an intralesional corticosteroid injection.
What Is a Kenalog Injection?
Kenalog is a brand name for triamcinolone, a corticosteroid that can be injected directly into certain inflamed acne nodules or cysts.
This treatment is performed by a medical professional. It can quickly reduce inflammation, swelling and pain. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, a corticosteroid injection can flatten most acne nodules or cysts within 48 to 72 hours.
This can make an intralesional corticosteroid injection an option for a particularly stubborn blemish before an important event. However, it is not appropriate for every type of pimple and should not be used as a routine treatment for multiple breakouts.
2 to 3 Days Before the Wedding
With only a few days left, keep your skincare routine simple.
If you already use a benzoyl peroxide spot treatment and your skin tolerates it, you can continue using it according to the product’s directions. Benzoyl peroxide is an established acne-fighting ingredient that can help reduce acne-causing bacteria and inflammation.
Do not apply more product than recommended in an attempt to make the blemish disappear faster. Too much can cause dryness, irritation and peeling, which may be even harder to cover with makeup.
A hydrocolloid acne patch can also protect a surface-level blemish and discourage touching or picking.
The Day of the Wedding
So you woke up with a pimple on your wedding day. Take a breath. It is probably much more noticeable to you than it will be to everyone else.
Start with your normal, gentle skincare routine. Avoid trying to aggressively dry out the blemish or piling on multiple new products.
When it is time for makeup, choose products labeled non-comedogenic or won’t clog pores. These options are less likely to contribute to additional breakouts.
Your makeup artist can also use concealer and foundation to minimize redness and even out your complexion. If you are worried about needing a touch-up later, keep your concealer with you or ask someone in your bridal party to carry it.
And remember, professional photographs can be retouched. One unexpected blemish does not have to become the defining detail of your wedding photos.
What Not to Do Before Your Wedding
When you have a pimple before your wedding, the temptation to throw everything at it can be strong. Resist it.
Don’t Pick or Squeeze It
Popping a pimple can push material deeper into the skin and increase inflammation. It can also increase your risk of scarring and discoloration.
Don’t Scrub Your Skin
Gritty scrubs and aggressive exfoliation can irritate acne-prone skin. More irritation does not mean faster healing.
The AAD specifically recommends avoiding scrubbing because it can worsen acne and inflammation.
Don’t Introduce a New Product
Your wedding week is not the time to test a new retinol, acid, peel, mask or acne treatment.
Even products designed for acne can cause irritation when introduced too quickly. Stick with products your skin already knows and tolerates.
Don’t Overdo Your Retinol
If retinol or another retinoid is already part of your regular skincare routine, continue using it according to your established schedule unless your dermatologist has told you otherwise.
Increasing the frequency right before your wedding can cause unnecessary dryness or irritation.
Don’t Sleep in Your Makeup
Your wedding makeup may stay on longer than usual, but make sure it comes off before bed. The AAD recommends removing makeup before going to sleep and choosing non-comedogenic products for acne-prone skin.
The Best Treatment for a Pimple Before Your Wedding
The best approach depends on how much time you have and what type of blemish you are dealing with.
A small surface-level pimple may respond well to a familiar spot treatment. A deep, painful cyst or nodule may benefit from an in-office corticosteroid injection. If you have several weeks before the wedding, your dermatologist can also help you create a skincare and treatment plan to keep breakouts under control.
Most importantly, don’t panic. A single blemish does not undo all the work you have put into your skin, and there are safe ways to manage an unexpected breakout.
