Redness Treatment: Options for Rosacea & Broken Capillaries

Persistent facial redness can have many different causes. Rosacea, acne, visible blood vessels, scars, birthmarks, sun damage, and other skin conditions can all contribute to a red or uneven complexion.

Because the underlying cause matters, there is no single redness treatment that works for everyone. At Supriya Aesthetic Dermatology, we evaluate the type and location of redness before recommending a treatment. Depending on the concern, options may include vascular lasers, BroadBand Light, professional skincare treatments, and a customized at-home routine.

Here are some of the treatments we may consider for unwanted redness.

Vbeam

Vbeam is a pulsed dye laser designed to target blood vessels beneath the skin. It can be used for a variety of vascular concerns, including facial redness, rosacea, visible blood vessels, certain birthmarks, and some scars with a vascular component.

The laser targets hemoglobin within blood vessels, allowing the provider to focus treatment on the unwanted vascular component while minimizing exposure to surrounding tissue.

Some patients notice improvement after a single treatment, while others need a series of treatments to achieve their desired results. The number of treatments depends on the condition being treated, its severity, and how the skin responds.

Downtime varies by treatment. Temporary redness, swelling, bruising, or other changes can occur after vascular laser treatment, so your provider will explain what to expect during your consultation.

Laser treatment can be particularly useful for persistent redness and visible blood vessels. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that patients receiving laser or light therapy for visible blood vessels often see improvement after one to three treatments, although individual results vary.

Forever Young BBL

Forever Young BBL uses BroadBand Light to target certain vascular and pigment concerns, making it another option for patients with diffuse redness, visible blood vessels, rosacea, and uneven skin tone.

BBL uses different wavelengths of light to target specific structures within the skin. For vascular concerns, the light is absorbed by hemoglobin in unwanted blood vessels, which can help reduce their appearance over time.

BBL can also address other visible signs of sun damage and uneven pigmentation, making it useful when redness occurs alongside an uneven complexion.

Your provider will determine whether BBL is appropriate based on your skin type, the cause of your redness, and the concern being treated. Temporary redness or swelling can occur after treatment, although BBL HEROic is designed to involve little to no downtime for many patients.

HydraFacial

HydraFacial is not a vascular laser, so it does not directly target the blood vessels responsible for conditions such as rosacea or broken capillaries.

However, a customized HydraFacial can be a useful maintenance treatment for patients who want to improve hydration, remove surface buildup, and support overall skin quality.

If your skin looks temporarily flushed or irritated, a gentle, hydrating approach may be more appropriate than aggressive exfoliation. Your provider can customize the treatment based on your skin’s current condition and sensitivity.

HydraFacial can also complement a broader treatment plan when redness occurs alongside concerns such as dryness, congestion, or uneven texture.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels can improve certain types of uneven skin tone and discoloration, but they are not the right treatment for every type of redness.

The type and strength of the peel matter. For example, a customized mandelic acid peel may be appropriate for patients looking to improve the appearance of uneven tone while maintaining a relatively gentle treatment approach.

At Supriya Aesthetic Dermatology, our Glow Peel uses mandelic acid and can be incorporated into a customized skincare plan. Your provider can determine whether a peel makes sense based on your skin type and the reason for your redness.

Patients with active rosacea, significant sensitivity, or an impaired skin barrier may need a different approach. Professional guidance is particularly important if you already use retinoids, exfoliating acids, or other active ingredients at home.

Skincare for Redness

Professional treatments are only one part of managing redness. Your daily skincare routine can also make a significant difference, particularly when irritation or a compromised skin barrier contributes to the appearance of redness.

Start with a gentle cleanser and a moisturizer suited to your skin type. Avoid adding multiple strong active ingredients at once, especially if your skin is already irritated.

For patients with rosacea or sensitive skin, a calming cleanser may be more appropriate than an aggressive acne cleanser or physical scrub. Our Purifying Cleanser is one option formulated for cleansing without unnecessarily stripping the skin.

Sun protection is also important. UV exposure can aggravate many types of redness and can contribute to visible skin damage over time. A broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher should be part of your daily routine.

The right skincare routine depends on what is actually causing the redness. Acne, rosacea, post-inflammatory redness, broken capillaries, and vascular birthmarks may require very different approaches.

What Is the Best Redness Treatment for You?

The first step is identifying what is causing your redness.

Vbeam may be appropriate when visible blood vessels or vascular redness are the primary concern. BBL can address certain vascular concerns while also improving the appearance of pigmentation and sun damage. HydraFacial and chemical peels may have a role in a broader skincare plan when appropriate.

In some cases, the best approach involves combining professional treatment with a carefully selected home skincare routine. Your provider can determine which options make sense for your skin rather than treating redness based solely on its appearance.
